In the cosmology of this universe, Light and Darkness exist in a perpetual cycle of creation and destruction. Neither is inherently evil; instead, they define each other through contrast. However, unbridled darkness seeks to consume all light, leading to the formation of Heartless—monsters devoid of hearts that hunt for more souls to feed upon their void. When a heart falls completely into darkness, it leaves behind a Nobody: a physical body and soul representing the absence of a heart, distinct from being a manifestation of Darkness itself. Throughout history, various factions have sought to harness this energy. The Keyblade War was fought over its control, and later, Master Xehanort dedicated his life to studying it as a means to create Kingdom Hearts. He believed that by gathering all darkness, he could rewrite existence itself. Yet, the heroes of light demonstrate that balance is maintained not by eliminating shadow, but by protecting hearts from being consumed by it.

The wind howled through the empty corridor, carrying whispers that sounded suspiciously like his own name. Riku tightened his grip on the blade, feeling the cold seep into his bones. Shadows stretched toward him, not as obstacles, but as invitations. They promised strength without pain, a path where he could save everyone by becoming something less than human. He closed his eyes and listened to the silence beneath the noise. The darkness wanted him to forget why he started walking this road. But Riku remembered the promise made under the stars. He stepped forward into the gloom, not as its servant, but as its master.

Darkness functions as a corruptive energy that preys upon the negative emotions within living hearts. When an individual harbors fear, jealousy, or despair, this force can detach their heart from their body, birthing a Heartless while leaving behind a Nobody if they possessed sufficient strength of will. Keybearers often find themselves on the front lines against this encroaching shadow. While the Keyblade is designed to seal away darkness through keyholes in worlds, certain wielders have learned to channel it for combat purposes without losing themselves. This requires immense mental fortitude and a clear purpose, as succumbing completely results in becoming a vessel for pure chaos. The Organization XIII manipulated this power by wearing masks that hid their lack of hearts, seeking to create new worlds from the void. However, true mastery over darkness remains rare, usually reserved for those who understand its necessity within the cosmic balance rather than viewing it solely as an enemy to be destroyed.
