The Keyblade acts as the ultimate arbiter between the worlds, able to open passages that are otherwise impossible to traverse while simultaneously locking 'Keyholes'—the hearts of worlds—to prevent them from falling into darkness. Its existence is tied intrinsically to these Keyholes; when a world's heart is corrupted, the Keyblade can either purify it or lock the Keyhole to contain the threat, rather than sealing away entire worlds. Throughout the ages, the Keyblade chooses its wielder based on the strength of their heart, not exclusively on mastery or fate—many wielders such as Roxas, Xion, and a young Riku have proven this, wielding the weapon effectively without being Keyblade Masters or bound by fate.
