Nobody

Shadows left behind when hearts fall to darkness, seeking purpose in the void.

When a person with a strong heart succumbs to darkness, their heart is consumed by the void, creating a Heartless. However, something else remains behind: the Nobody. These entities are composed of body and memories but lack hearts entirely. Despite this emptiness, they do not inherently feel emotions or automatically retain their original human feelings, though some may develop new sentiments over time. They are often driven by an intense desire to reclaim what was lost or to reshape the world in their image. While many Nobodies fade into obscurity, the most powerful gather under banners like Organization XIII. They serve as a central pillar of conflict throughout the saga, blurring the lines between villainy and tragedy. Their existence proves that even without hearts, the capacity for ambition—and destruction—persists.

Lore & Background

The creation of a Nobody is a direct consequence of Heartless generation. When a heart turns completely dark, it leaves the body, forming a Heartless. The remaining shell, retaining memories but devoid of a heart and thus unable to inherently feel emotions, becomes a Nobody. This duality ensures that every act of darkness births two distinct enemies: one driven by instinctual hunger, the other by calculated will. Despite lacking hearts, Nobodies are capable of experiencing sensations like pain or developing feelings over time, though these do not stem from an emotional core as they do in humans. They do not die easily; destroying a Nobody permanently requires a Keyblade, not light magic or defeating the corresponding Heartless. This resilience makes them formidable opponents for Keyblade wielders who rely on heart-based magic. Many powerful Nobodies join Organization XIII, an elite group seeking to restore their lost hearts by recreating Kingdom Hearts. They wear hooded cloaks that obscure their faces to hide their true forms from outsiders and to represent their status within the group, though not all members know each other's identities perfectly; some have hidden agendas and lower-ranked members may not know the organization's true goals. Their collective goal is to gather Hearts from others to achieve this restoration, a quest that drives much of the overarching narrative.

In Their Own Story

The wind rustled through Twilight Town, carrying the scent of rain and old secrets. He sat on the bench beneath the clock tower, watching the hands spin without feeling their passage. There was no heartbeat in his chest to match the rhythm of the town, only a hollow silence where warmth should have been. Yet, when he looked at his hand, it trembled with a memory that wasn't his own. He reached for the Keyblade resting beside him, its metal cold against skin that felt real but knew no pain. In this quiet moment between battles, the Nobody wondered if finding a heart was worth losing the peace of being nothing.

Reader's Guide

Nobodies are not tools to be wielded, but sentient beings born from the loss of a heart. When a person succumbs to darkness and a Heartless is created, their body and memories remain as a Nobody. These entities often possess immense power comparable to Keyblade Masters, utilizing weapons like the Darkside or Keyblades themselves. In combat, Nobodies are resistant to standard physical attacks due to their lack of true life force. However, they can be destroyed by light-based magic or Keyblades capable of sealing darkness. Some powerful Nobodies, such as members of Organization XIII, wear black cloaks with gold insignias to hide their forms and maintain order within their ranks. Understanding a Nobody requires recognizing that despite lacking hearts, they retain memories and emotions. This makes them unpredictable; some seek revenge, while others search for the hearts they lost. Players must approach encounters not just as battles, but as confrontations with former humans seeking redemption or oblivion in the digital void of their existence.
